The village of Cuevas de San Marcos is situated at the northern end of the province of Malaga, and at the southern end of the province of Cordoba. It has a population of about 4,500. The village is very typically 'Andalucian' and you will rarely hear English spoken! The locals are exceedingly friendly and are thrilled when you try out your Spanish on them! The people of the village are called Cuevachos .There are a limited number of shops in the village, and there is a market in the square on Saturday mornings – well worth a visit. Cuevas is very typical of the region and is served by a medical centre, chemist, and DIA Supermarket. There are also many festivals throughout the year, the largest of which, and not to be missed are Semana Santa held at easter, where processions carry heavy figures of Christ and the Virgin Mary through the streets to the beat of a marching band and La Ferria. This festival is held in August and the whole place comes alive at around 10pm until the small hours. Song, dance, drinking and the consumption of various mouth watering local specialities is obligatory as is having fun.
